So.. Since I have a bunch of sessions this week I decided I’d pick up a few pieces of new gear to have around the house. Since I went freelance, I really haven’t had the need to dump loads of money into gear. I sold off most of my stuff actually. I just needed a few good dynamics, a nice condenser, a nice pre, interface, monitors, computer, amps, and keyboards. It’s plenty of stuff to get me through songwriting sessions and overdub duties here at the house. One of the nice things about going freelance is the fact that you don’t have the overhead and expense of gear. But I was itching to pick up something new, so I bought a GAP Pre-73 (a neve inspired preamp) and a MXL Mogami Edition V69 Tube condenser.
I wanted to have a nice colored pre at home so I decided to give this a shot. It’s been getting great reviews over on the forums. First impressions is that it is built REALLY solid. I was also surprised at how big it was. It’s a lot deeper than I thought. I will follow up and post a new entry with my thoughts once I’ve tried it.
For the most part, MXL makes really cheap microphones. BUT every so often they come out with a winner. I’m hoping this is one of them! I did have another tube mic from MXL in the past called the 960 I believe, and I really liked that one a lot. The v69 has picked up some really good reviews, so I am excited to hear it. I’ll probably dig through the ol’ “Alemon’s Big Bag of Toobz” I have laying around here somewhere.
Like I said, I have a bunch of sessions this weekend, so I will have the opportunity to put these through the paces. I will check back with you guys on what I think! If I think they are worth others buying, then I will posts links on where to get em!
Im off to make records. Have a good day!
